With school right around the corner, I decided to steal a fun idea I had seen a couple of my friends do--start an annual tradition of staying up ALL NIGHT. I had mentioned it to my oldest and she kept bugging me about it, so at the last minute I told her we would do it.
It was very last minute (which is totally my style) and not very planned, as I forgot I had also told a friend I would cover her shift at the church. I quickly made some mashed potatoes, as requested by my husband to go with the beef tenderloin and sausage he brought home and left for work, and started loading up on coffee to get ready for our adventure (which is totally extra, but somewhat important info---especially the loading upon coffee part lol). Anyways, I told the kids as soon as I got off to be ready because we were going to be staying up all night and that I expected them to behave and just go with the flow and have fun.
I get home and only 1 kid is dressed and they're just lounging around, playing video games. My husband had went to lay down because he had work the next day, so we had to keep the noise level down which doesn't make for a great start for an all-nighter LOL. Anywho, we kept it simple and started with an activity box I found in my office cleanup that morning. I had bought it earlier in the year for $1 or so after Christmas. There is a powder dye you use for the bloody guts slime and it dyed my hands. I think the grossest part was the furry slime-- like they want you to actually put it on the floor and pickup the dirt and animal hair and play with it. 😳😳
Afterwards, everyone got dressed and we headed out to start our night. Our first stop was going to be Wal-Mart as you know that's where all the interesting people go late at night LMAO...including us I guess. On the way the park lights were shining brightly so we decided to stop. We were headed to the swings, but the (much needed) rain from the day before left the area extra muddy, so instead we went over to the monkey bars and slides. It then began lightning outside so we made a run for the car, which got everyone's adrenaline pumping!
Austin then had to use the restroom so we made a stop for 7-eleven, only to find they didn't have a public restroom. We bought Slurpees instead. Cheers!
Wal-Mart: Okay, so we finally made it and just before the storm hit! We stayed for at least 3 hours y'all! I don't think we even made it all the way through because we didn't even touch the grocery area. At one point Austin got cranky and started throwing a fit. I quickly reminded him that I wasn't putting up with it and if he was going to act a fool, I was going to spank him (yep, I love. I discipline. I do timeout. I ground. I spank.) and drop him off at home. He walked around a little bit and was fine luckily. We hit up the toy section, crafts, clothes, and school supplies. It happened to be tax-free weekend, so I did grab necessities--filler paper and underwear. Wait. I have a complaint. This time (and Christmas) are a great time to buy underwear--I found Isabel a pack of 12 for $9.48. We saw the same pack of 6 in the ladies section for $8.-- (same brand/style), so of course I got the extra 6 for $1 more because it only makes sense, BUT then went to get Isaac's (who now requires a move up to the men's sizes) and could not find a single pack of 5 for under $12!! The kids sections had bigger packs at a good deal, but why not in the men's? Do bigger boys and teens not want affordable underwear too? Seriously, like why?? Lol
After our Wally World shenanigans, we were going to stop by H-E-B for some late night fun, but they are closed between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m, so we made a stop at IHOP. I loaded up on coffee and instead of our usual order of pancakes, we just sat around coloring, playing tic-tac-toe in the notebook I had in my bag, and playing the games on the coloring sheet that included going around the table making funny fish faces, naming sea creatures, and our own game of 'Name as many restaurants you can think of.
At some point Isaac became sleepy, even after I sugared up my coffee and gave him some, and he was crabby so we just let him lay his head there. I'm sure the waiter thought we were crazy for just ordering sundaes, but then I explained to him what we were doing and he was great and gave the kids a free hot cocoa to help get them sugared up again lol. We stayed a bit longer and then headed out.
Donnie would be getting ready to leave for work, so we decided to go home so we could see him off and play video games. Isaac made it to the car and was out again and Austin didn't make it home either. As soon as we got home Isaac went to bed but Austin had new life--at least for an hour. We watched Mrs Doubtfire and finally the sun came up. Isabel claimed her glory for making it the whole night, and we went to bed. It was an interesting night for sure and I can't wait to do it again! If you happen to be adventurous and try it out, tell us about it! ;D
Here is my checklist of what is sure to happen:
1. Someone is going to get cranky or hangry at some point in the night.
2. Coffee (or caffeine) is required.
3. You must have fun.
4. Someone will more than likely fall asleep....it could be one of you, or the guy sitting by himself on his phone at Ihop.
5. Your urine will smell of said coffee requirement the next day.
