I apologize ahead of time for the crappy picture LOL. I am going on week 2 of no phone! 😳 And I didn't have a chance to grab the camera before I had to put everything away and go pickup the kids and head to work.
Anyways, the Food Pantry at Operaton Phantom Support is currently open every Thursday and Saturday from 10am-2pm, serving active duty, veterans, and their families. As of May 9th, 2018 617,787 lbs of food have been distributed. And in April, they served 3,628 soldiers and veterans, helping out 13,948 family members!
Here was Thursday's Pantry List, which as mentioned before, does change depending on availability.
Do note that it is a pantry, so many of the frozen items, meats, and breads/pastries that are received and given out, are past their expiration which does not mean that they are not good and are saving tons of food from going in the dump each year. You can find out more here from the FDA and their guidelines. Also, OPS is rally great about throwing out anything moldy and gross.
- Meat is a pretty general idea of what we'll receive. It always varies. I've left with chicken, ground beef, roasts, ribs, pork chops, sausage, and so much more! This time we received lunch meat( 4 to be exact), which is perfect because I forgot to grab some on my HE-B run, and with summer coming, I now the kids will be eating lots of sandwiches (they love them LOL).
- Cucumbers We love cucumbers, and along with the Italian dressing I deal I stocked up on at H-E-B, I will be making Pasta Salad!
- Apples nice red delicious apples. Either the kids will eat them fresh, or I will make applesauce. Either way, it's a win-win!
- Melons- no melons when I came in, but there were grapes! Sometimes we don't eat them fast enough, so I throw them in the freezer to enjoy as nice, less guilty frozen treat.
- Peppers- Hatch peppers to be exact. I'm a little undecided what to do with them at the moment. Stuff them, grill them and add to recipes? How do you like to make/use them?
- Onions- there were rd and yellow. I still have many yellow, so went with purple. I think I need to pickle some more soon.
- Corn on the Cob- Fresh on the grill, or peeled and cut and laced in ziploc baggies to freeze. Nothing says summer like corn!
- Bread + Pastry- So sometimes this really varies. I didn't get a pastry, just bread because they were out which is okay because we'll save some calories, right? I left with over 5 different types of breads to include croissants that I will be making breakfast sandwiches with, french bread that I'll use to make pizza boats, and so on. I will say sometimes, even with freezing the bread, we have to much or it goes bad fast, so I usually throw out for the chickens to eat and they love it.
Your $20 monthly donation, can also get you access to this awesome program and more. The next Pantry Day is Saturday, May 19th, 2018 from 10am-2 pm.
